At Marell Consulting Limited, we deliver tailored school improvement and quality assurance solutions for independent schools inspected by Ofsted. Independent schools often serve as the essential “last chance saloon” for pupils who struggle to thrive in mainstream settings, making it essential for schools to offer a consistently high-quality provision. We work alongside school leaders to build systems that align the school's mission with Ofsted’s framework and the Independent School Standards, ensuring a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
Through rigorous monitoring and evaluation, we help schools identify and standardise what works, while addressing areas for development using evidence-based approaches. With years of experience supporting independent schools, we are committed to ensuring that every aspect of provision is strengthened so that pupils receive the best possible education and schools remain inspection-ready at all times.
Schools
There are around 2,500 independent schools in England. Half are inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, while the other half, non-association independent schools, are inspected by Ofsted; these are the schools we support. Often smaller in size, many admit pupils referred by local authority SEND commissioners, while others specialise in serving pupils from overseas, those of a specific faith, or children in hospital settings. Independent school proprietors range from individuals to charities and care companies. Since 2012, we have proudly supported over 40 such schools.
Pupils
Non-association independent schools provide vital support for pupils with diverse and often complex needs. Many of these students have special educational needs (SEN), including those requiring support for social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) challenges. They may exhibit challenging behavior, have faced adverse childhood experiences, and often come from backgrounds of repeated exclusion from mainstream schools. These schools create tailored environments where such pupils can access the education and care they need to thrive, fostering growth and opportunity where it is most needed.

Although Marell Consulting is proudly based in Birmingham, we work with independent schools across the country. Our commitment to supporting schools wherever they are has taken us to a wide range of locations, including Mansfield, Glossop, Gravesend, Burnley, Croydon, Hull, Liverpool, Deal, and Stoke-on-Trent, among many others.
